How to Use the Cross Stitch Thread Calculator

Step 1: Enter the Number of Full Cross Stitches

Enter the number of full cross stitches used for one thread color.

For example, your pattern may show:

• DMC 321: 1,250 full cross stitches;
• DMC 699: 720 full cross stitches;
• DMC Blanc: 2,100 full cross stitches.

Calculate every color separately. Do not divide the total number of stitches in the entire pattern equally between the colors because each color is used in a different amount.

The stitch count is often included in the color key, pattern statistics, or thread usage report.

Step 2: Choose the Fabric Count

Select the fabric on which you will stitch:

• 11 count;
• 14 count;
• 16 count;
• 18 count;
• 20 count;
• 22 count.

Lower-count fabric creates larger stitches and normally uses more thread. Higher-count fabric creates smaller stitches and normally uses less thread.

If you are stitching over two fabric threads on evenweave or linen, use half the fabric count. For example, 28-count fabric stitched over two is calculated as 14 stitches per inch.

Step 3: Select the Number of Strands

Choose how many separated strands of embroidery floss you will place in the needle.

Two strands are commonly used for full cross stitches on 14-count Aida, but you should always follow the instructions included with your pattern or kit.

Using more strands creates fuller coverage but also increases thread consumption.

Step 4: Add an Extra Allowance

Enter the percentage of extra thread you want to include.

An additional 10–20% is a practical choice for most projects. The default 20% allowance helps cover:

• thread tails;
• starting and finishing;
• knots and tangles;
• small mistakes;
• damaged thread;
• normal stitching waste.

If your design has many separated color areas or long jumps between stitches, keeping the 20% allowance is the safer option.

Step 5: Calculate the Thread Amount

Select Calculate Thread.

The calculator will immediately show:

• the estimated thread length in meters;
• the same amount in yards;
• the settings used for the calculation.

If you only need a quick thread estimate, you can stop here. Choosing a brand and entering a color number are optional unless you want to create a shopping list.

Step 6: Add a Color to Your Shopping List

To build a project shopping list:

1. Select the thread brand.
2. Enter the color number or name.
3. Check the estimated number of skeins.
4. Select Add This Result to Shopping List.

The calculator includes preset skein lengths for:

• DMC Mouliné Spécial — 8 m;
• Anchor Stranded Cotton — 8 m;
• Madeira Mouliné Sticktwist — 10 m;
• COSMO Stranded Cotton — 8 m;
• Sullivans Embroidery Floss — approximately 8 m or 8.7 yd.

If your thread has a different skein length, choose the custom brand option and enter the length printed on its label.

After a color is added, the stitch-count and color fields clear automatically so you can immediately calculate the next color. Your fabric count, strands, and allowance remain selected.

If you add the same brand and color again, the calculator combines the amounts into one list entry.

About the Color Squares

Recognized DMC color numbers display an approximate color preview.

Screen settings, printers, lighting, and dye lots can change how a color appears. Always check the number printed on the skein label or compare it with a physical DMC color card when an exact match is important.

Anchor, Madeira, COSMO, Sullivans, and custom thread numbers can still be added to the shopping list and PDF. Their color squares are not displayed because an unverified approximate color could be misleading.

• thread brand;
• color number or name;
• number of stitches;
• thread required in meters;
• thread required in yards;
• number of whole skeins to buy;

Cross Stitch Thread Calculation Example

Imagine that one color in your pattern contains:

• 5,000 full cross stitches;
• 14-count Aida;
• 2 strands;
• 20% extra allowance.

The calculator estimates approximately:

• 23.95 meters;
• 26.19 yards.

If you select a standard 8-meter DMC skein, the shopping list will tell you to buy three whole skeins of that color.

The calculator always rounds the purchase quantity up to a whole skein so you do not end up with less thread than the estimate requires.

How Accurate Is the Embroidery Floss Estimate?

The calculator provides a practical planning estimate. Actual thread use may change slightly depending on:

• stitching tension;
• the length of each working thread;
• how you start and finish;
• travelling between separate areas;
• knots, tangles, and mistakes;
• the types of stitches in the pattern.

The main calculation is designed for full cross stitches. If your pattern contains a large amount of backstitch, half stitches, fractional stitches, French knots, or decorative stitching, allow additional thread according to the pattern instructions.
