How to Use the Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator

1. Enter the size of your pattern

Look at your cross stitch pattern and find the number of stitches wide and high. For example, your pattern may say:

120 stitches wide × 150 stitches high

Choose Stitches and enter these two numbers. If you already know the finished size of the design, you can choose centimeters or inches instead.

2. Choose your fabric

Select Aida or linen/evenweave. Then enter the fabric count printed on the label.

• 14-count Aida has 14 squares in one inch.
• 16-count Aida has 16 squares in one inch.
• 18-count Aida has 18 squares in one inch.

A higher fabric count makes the stitches smaller. This means the finished design will also be smaller.

If you use linen or evenweave, choose whether each cross stitch is worked over one or two fabric threads. For example, 28-count linen stitched over two threads gives the same design size as 14-count Aida.

3. Add a margin on each side

The margin is the empty fabric around your stitched design. You need it for framing, holding the fabric in a hoop, or sewing the finished project.

Enter the margin for one side. The calculator automatically adds it to the left, right, top, and bottom.

For many framed projects, 2–3 inches (about 5–7.5 cm) per side is a practical starting point. If you are making a pillow, ornament, or Christmas stocking, follow the cutting and sewing instructions included with the pattern.

4. Calculate the fabric size

Select Calculate fabric size. You will see:

• Stitched area — the size of the design itself.
• Minimum fabric size — the design plus the margins you entered.
• Recommended cut size — the minimum size rounded safely upward.

How Is Cross Stitch Fabric Size Calculated?

The basic formula is simple:

Number of stitches ÷ stitches per inch = stitched size in inches

Then the margin is added to both sides:

Total fabric size = stitched size + left margin + right margin

The same calculation is used for the height. The calculator completes these steps automatically and converts the answer into centimeters.

Cross Stitch Fabric Calculation Example

Imagine that your pattern is 120 × 150 stitches. You choose 14-count Aida and a 3-inch margin on each side.

• The stitched area is about 8.57 × 10.71 inches.
• Six inches are added to the width: 3 inches on the left and 3 inches on the right.
• Six inches are also added to the height.
• The minimum fabric size is about 14.57 × 16.71 inches.
• The recommended rounded cut is 14.75 × 16.75 inches.

Always round the fabric size up, not down. A slightly larger piece can be trimmed later. A piece that is too small cannot be repaired.

How Much Fabric Do I Need for a Cross Stitch Stocking?

First, use the rectangular stitch dimensions printed in the pattern. Add enough fabric around the design before cutting the stocking shape.

The calculator checks whether your fabric is large enough for the embroidery. It does not replace the stocking template or sewing instructions. A finished stocking may also need a seam allowance, backing fabric, lining, and a hanging loop.

Yes. More stitches fit inside one inch, so the same pattern is smaller on 18-count Aida than on 14-count Aida.
